Unit 4 focuses on the history of the Studio System. Early movie studios were controlled by "legal" monopolies and trusts. These studios controlled all of the production including the lives of the stars, directors, and other artists. While there was a great deal of freedom in what could be shown in the movies, the stars themselves were treated as a commodity (an object that was for sale.) Still, without this era it is unlikely that we would have developed the "Movie Star."
