In Class Shorts and Videos for Review:
The United States was not the first to create "movies"- in fact, during the early years of movies, the United States was trailing behind Europe in the creation of cinema (artistic movies). Post World War I, Eastern Europe began experimenting with new forms of filming. Expressionism was born in Germany, Eisenstein invented the Montage, and American- Paul Flaherty went to the Inuit to film and create the first documentary. While his is an American, without the European trailblazers, it is unlikely Flaherty would have gained enough funding to produce Nanook of the North.
Starting in this unit, we will be watching clips of these movies rather than the entire work; however, I am putting the entire film on the website in case the students want to watch the entire film as part of a make up assignment or for enjoyment. Especially in the last two films, watching is difficult because the title cards are in Russian. I am including the time stamp for the clips I will be showing in class. I will be explaining what is going on during class. In both of the Russian Films we will be focusing on the artistic use of the Montage rather than the message of the movies.
Das Kabinett des Doctor Caligari- Janowitz, Mayer, Weine
(We will be watching all of this movie.)
